Colleges want curious, persistent, articulate, and self-aware students.

The Common Application essay topics throw the door wide open for each applicant to show how he or she is that kind of person.

We cover everything from application timelines and strategies to tips on financing your child's education.

The Common Application (usually called the Common App) is a college admissions application accepted by over 700 colleges and universities.

Depending on the schools to which you are applying, the Common App can greatly streamline the admissions process.

For example, you could potentially apply to five schools by filling out only one application — and better yet, writing only one essay!

Don’t worry, one of the most common questions all high schoolers have is, “What should I write my college essay about?

” When I help students brainstorm potential essay topics, I usually ask them dozens of questions, hoping to unearth just a single response that will capture the interest of a college admissions officer.

Take a look at the seven available essay prompts for the 2019-20 Common App.

(These prompts are unchanged from the 2018-19 application season.) As we noted in a previous blog post, prompt number 7 actually grants students permission to write their own essay question and respond to it. Despite (or perhaps in light of) all this intellectual and creative freedom, you may find yourself stuck.
