Problem solving plays an important role in mathematics and should have a prominent role in the mathematics education of K-12 students.

However, knowing how to incorporate problem solving meaningfully into the mathematics curriculum is not necessarily obvious to mathematics teachers.

The best way to become a skilled problem solver is to learn the background material well, and then to solve a lot of problems! I could use this strategy when there are a limited number of possible answers and when two items are the same but they have one characteristic that is different.

Some problems are obviously about a geometric situation, and it is clear you want to draw a picture and mark down all of the given information before you try to solve it. Notice none of the perfect squares end in 2, 3, 7, or 8.

Solve your probability, combination, permutation problems. Statistics - find median, mean (arithmetic, geometric, quadratic), mode, dispersion, mormal distributions, t-Distribution.

Fortunately, a considerable amount of research on teaching and learning mathematical problem solving has been conducted during the past 40 years or so and, taken collectively; this body of work provides useful suggestions for both teachers and curriculum writers. The following brief provides some directions on teaching with problem solving based on research. You can ask for help and hints if you’re stuck, share what you have tried so far, offer advice to others and get expert guidance from Cambridge University students and staff. You may also be interested in Stephen Siklos's book, Advanced Problems in Mathematics: Preparing for University, which can be downloaded for free.Note: Downloading the lists of proposed problems requires authentication by password.I will distribute periodically the necessary Problems from magazines like the American Mathematical Monthly are traditionally (but not always) harder than the ones proposed in the magazines mentioned above.
